This Food Chart, issued by The Ministry of Food (MOF) gives you the recommended nutritional foods for a balanced healthy diet. I have re-imaged this poster and included the rationing timelines at the bottom of this poster. These are as follows...... September 1939, the first commodity rationed was fuel. On 8th January 1940, bacon, sugar and butter were rationed. Shortly after this rationing schemes were introduced for biscuits, cereals jam, tea, milk, eggs, cheese, margarine, sweets, bacon, ham, other meat, dried and canned fruit. Most controlled items were rationed by weight, with the exception of meat. This was rationed by price. Soap, coal and newspaper also had restrictions. Rabbit and pigeon were not subject to restrictions and were plentiful in supply. Fish, although not rationed, rose in price because of the danger posed to our trawler men whilst at sea. The traditional fish and chip shop saw long queues as supplies were sporadic. Fresh fruit and vegetables were not rationed, however, imported fruit like bananas and lemons virtually disappeared until after the war. As there were such severe food shortages many people started growing their own food in gardens and allotments. Encouragement came from the government with the, now famous “Dig for Victory” posters/campaign. Bread was not rationed until after the war ended. Even clothing was rationed on a points system. After the war, concessions started to be lifted, however, it was not until 4th July 1954 that we saw an end to rationing.
