Mercedes Benz 300 SL Panamericana Road Race 1952 ~ Through a Mexican Town The Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border sedan and sports car racing event on open roads in Mexico similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was widely held by contemporaries to be the most dangerous race of any type in the world. This poster was based on the victory of the Mercedes-Benz W194 of Karl Kling and Hans Klenk. Mercedes sent a team of highly experienced mechanics and drivers and, of course, the 300SL to Mexico. The race nearly came to a disastrous end when a vulture shattered the windscreen at over 120 m.p.h. injuring Hans Klenk (navigator). Klenk, bleeding badly, ordered Kling to maintain speed until a tyre change some 43 miles later. Klenk used pre-prepared “pace notes” and was able to identify bends etc in a shorthand communication form to Kling. This is widely believed to be the first time pace notes were used in competition. This innovative form of communication is widely used by navigators in rallying today. This double sided leaflet was in a really poor condition. I have reset the leaflet in Photoshop and Corel Painter, the two sides were merged together to form this single A3 image. I really hope that you enjoy looking at this on your wall. The majority of these adverts have benefitted from total restoration. Some have been re-typeset. Some have original photographs inserted, if available. Some have logos and badges added. Any badge, if photographed, is from my personal library. Any logo will have been re-drawn by me in Photoshop or Corel Painter. Some of these are totally original recovered from agency “mock-ups”. Therefore these should be viewed as pieces of artwork, rather than company history. Image size A3 **Digital Download Only No Physical Product will be dispatched.
