This photograph shows the Supermarine S5 – N220 at Calshot, Southampton in 1927, preparing for the race in Venice, Italy on 26th September 1927. The image was possibly taken in June or July of that year. Flight Lieutenant Sidney Norman Webster, A.F.C., of the Royal Air Force High-Speed Flight, won the 1927 Schneider Trophy Race, flying the S5. The Venetian course was 50km (31 miles). He completed the 7 laps in 46 mins, 20.3 seconds, at an average speed of 281.656 miles per hour. Thereby establishing a new Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Record for Speed Over 100 Kilometres. The ship in the background is the SS Leviathan en route to New York via Cherbourg. This was a large passenger ocean liner acquisitioned by the American government in 1917 to serve as a troopship. Subsequently sold into private hands, the ship ran until 1934. High operating costs and low passenger numbers during the Depression led to the Leviathan being laid up in New York Harbour until 1938, when she sailed to Scotland and was scrapped.
