Short Sunderland S.25 Mk5 Flying Boat The Last Flight of G-BJHS a Short Sunderland S.25 Mk5 Flying Boat at Calshot near Southampton, 20th July 1993.The flying boat was going to an aeronautical museum in the U.S.A. where it was to be restored to its wartime specification for example gun turrets. History:- The Short S.25 Mk5 Sunderland is a British flying boat patrol bomber, developed and constructed by Short Brothers for the Royal Air Force. The aircraft took its service name from Sunderland in North East of England. The S.25 played a pivotal role for Coastal Command in the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War in the fight against the German U-boats. Remaining in service with the Royal Air Force until 1959 the Short Sunderland would serve during the Berlin Airlift and the Korean War. Post war they were flown by B.O.A.C. (British Overseas Air Corporation). This photograph was taken by my father, Alfie, who travelled to Calshot with a friend who had flown Sunderland’s during the war. The image is very atmospheric and I hope you enjoy looking at this on your wall. Image size A3 Supplied on a Satin Photographic paper, SRA3 = Size 330mm x 483mm.
